Open Dutch Fiber (ODF) and VolkerWessels Telecom have entered into an agreement for the fibre optic coverage of over 500,000 households in the Netherlands. In addition to designing and building the fiber optic networks on behalf of ODF, VolkerWessels Telecom will also manage the network distribution centers and the passive infrastructure underneath. This is done from its own Network Operations Centre (NOC) in Lieren. For this management, a second agreement has been concluded between VolkerWessels Telecom and ODF.
Glazing of Rotterdam-Alexander and Leidschendam-Voorburg
The implementation of the first two projects is now in full swing in the suburban areas of Rotterdam-Alexander and Leidschendam-Voorburg. In the Rotterdam-Alexander district, the plan is to lay fiber to about 43,000 homes and eight network distribution centers, or PoPs (Points of Presence). In the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg, this will involve approximately 38,000 homes and seven PoPs.

PoPs are an important part of fiber optic networks. From these distribution points, the fiber optic connections are made to the homes. The process from construction to management of the PoPs is almost entirely carried out by VolkerWessels companies. Westo Prefab Betonsystemen makes the assembled fiber optic buildings, while VolkerWessels Telecom does the furnishing, construction and management of the fiber optic buildings.
ODF and VWT Collaboration
"ODF is choosing urban areas where there is no fiber yet. In this way we are making an important contribution to the further digitalization of the Netherlands," said Michael Griffioen, co-CEO at Open Dutch Fiber. "VWT has years of experience as a market leader in the design and construction of FttH networks. Therefore, we see in VWT a reliable partner to build and manage many open fiber networks in the coming years."
"We look forward to working with ODF to build future-proof telecom networks in urban areas. After all, these networks are indispensable for cities to meet challenges in areas such as the environment, mobility and security," adds Niels Kamphuis, director of FttX at VolkerWessels Telecom. "VolkerWessels Telecom fulfills the role of full turn-key contractor for ODF. This gives us the opportunity to combine our years of experience in the telecom market with innovative solutions and technical professionals."
